British System Explained
For International families, the British Education system may be confusing especially when you are not familiar with the system and terminology used. For instance just understanding the type of school can be confusing; fee paying schools are referred to as “Private” or “Public” schools, whereas Government run schools are often known as State Schools.
There are more than 3,000 Private schools across the UK and choosing the right one for your child is imperative. Considerations include single sex or co-education, boarding or day school, UK or US curriculum, International Baccalaureate (IB) or A levels. Magnus can help you identify the right school for your child and your family.
In the UK, compulsory full time education starts from the age of 4 until the age of 16. After this, a further two years of education follow prior to University education. Parents should be aware that year group naming is not consistent across different countries, and applications should be driven by age.
Academic years in the UK run from 1st September to 31st August. The largest intakes into schools are predominantly at 4+, 7+, 11+, 13+ and 16+ years of age. This number refers to the age your child will be when they start the school in September. The assessment process will usually be in the preceding year, although some schools execute pre-tests that can be two years prior to expected entry. (For example, for 13+ entry, assessments will usually be at age 12, however some schools may pre-test children at age 10).
Ideally parents need to identify their shortlist of schools well in advance of expected entry to fully establish those schools’ entry requirements and maximise their chances. Magnus has the knowledge to guide you through the process, and is able to offer you objective, detailed advice on the British School System and suitable schools for your child.
Assessments
EAL (English as an Additional Language) Assessments
For International parents, it is essential to determine their child’s level of proficiency in English prior to selecting schools in the British School System, as some schools have a minimum required proficiency. The EAL assessment process can identify your child’s level of English and compare this with the expected level of proficiency required by each school stage. Magnus is able to provide EAL assessors, and formulate a plan to improve language skills to the required level where needed.
Academic Assessments
Academic assessments, structured for different age groups, determine the academic level of international students and provide you with a benchmark of their level in comparison to UK peers. They are invaluable as they identify areas of competence, areas needing consolidation and gaps in knowledge (due to curriculum differences), and also make comparisons between underlying ability and levels of attainment in literacy and numeracy.
Abilities are analysed and measured, from pre reading and early writing to advanced reading, comprehension and written expression. Mathematical understanding is also measured and analysed.
Following the assessment a verbal feedback and a detailed written report together with a list of strategies, books and resources are provided to assist parents with their children’s education, enabling them to move confidently forward in boosting their individual child’s learning. The assessments can be conducted face to face or online.
School Selection Advisory
Each child is unique and it is important to find the best suited school which enhances your child’s strengths and prepare him for life without compromising his happiness and wellbeing. We will create a Bespoke Education Plan by understanding your family’s needs, aspirations and your child’s skills. Pupils are assessed to pinpoint the strengths and gaps due to different curriculums. The assessment follows a consultation with leading educational experts to discuss the potential school options taking into consideration all family preferences. Solutions, such as additional teaching and interview practice are available to cover any identified gaps to ensure readiness for any school entry requirements. Entry criteria vary from school to school with much to consider; open days, registration dates, assessment dates, private or group school tours and offer management (including waitlisted places). With more than one school to consider, Magnus can provide a timeline management service and help you stay in control of these administrative requirements.
